USA ROBERT OPPENHEIMER
Robert Oppenheimer. Portrait of the US physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). Oppenheimer studied at Harvard, USA, and Gottingen, Germany, working with renowned physicists such as Dirac, Bohr and Heisenberg. In 1943, he became director of the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, where the first atomic bomb was constructed. He opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, losing his security rating in the anti-communist hysteria of 1954. In 1963, he was reinstated and received the Fermi Award. Photographed in 1956. ***** NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL ***** (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/PHOTO (C) ESTATE OF FRANCIS BELLO/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
