The son of a carpet layer of German descent and a Cherokee Indian, Garner was born as James Baumgardner on 7 April 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma/USA. He started his career with a role in the television western series 'Maverick' in 1957. He then turned towards cinema films, including 'Move Over, Darling' (1963) and 'The Great Escape' (1963). In 1974, Garner became the classic television private eye in 'The Rockford Files', and in 1988 returned to the Western genre, co-starring in Sunset, a mythical story of Wyatt Earp, Tom Mix and 1920's Hollywood. After that, he appeared in the Hollywood remake of his old television series 'Maverick' (1994), where he played the father of his former character Bret Maverick. (KEYSTONE/DPA/Goldschmidt)
