ERSTER WELTKRIEG FRANKREICH SCHLACHT AN DER SOMME 1916
As well as the efficiency of the German machine-gunners in their well-fortified bunkers, the lack of judgement of their commenders and massive numbers of dead and wounded the British soldiers during the Battles of the Somme also faced another enemy - mud. Torrential autumn rain on the shell cratered huge pools of filthy, stinking mud which made each movement an effort and slowed the Allied advance to a cral. Here a wounded Tommy is brought to safety after the Battle of the Ancre in November 1916 - the closing stages of the Somme campaign. (KEYSTONE/CAMERA PRESS/STR) === ; ===
