JAPAN VULKAN USU
Black smoke billows from a slope of the Mount Usu following an eruption, Friday, March 31, 2000. The volcano, 770 kilometers (475 miles) north of Tokyo, had erupted for the first time in 23 years, bringing volcanic ashes over the eastern part of the area which forced incoming flights cancel. No dead or injuries are reported since residents in towns surrounding the mountain had evacuated before the eruption.
