The number of registered employees at the market is over 60,000. Tsukiji is the world's largest fish market, handling over 400 varieties and 2000 metric tons of seafood per day. The fish market, the last remnant of old mercantile Tokyo culture, faces demise. Now that many supermarket chains buy fish directly from wholesalers the quantity of fish handled at Tsukiji is declining. The Tokyo government has used this decline as justification for selling the Tsukiji land, located next to Ginza, Japan's most-expensive real estate. Plans are to move the market across the Sumida River to a new location by 2012. EPA/EVERETT KENNEDY BROWN
