The 2004 tsunami was caused by a 9.2-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. An unusual vertical lift, caused when two tectonic plates collided, triggered the killer wave that claimed more than 8,000 people's lives in Thailand, more than 2,000 of them foreign tourists vacationing in beach resorts along the Andaman Sea coastline such as Khao Lak, Phuket and Phi Phi.
