The German parliament began a debate on an immigration law bill with a warning from Minister Schily to the conservative opposition not to exploit the issue with demagoguery. The bill from Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrat-Greens coalition would open the door for thousands of foreign workers in order to meet a shortage of skilled labour, as part of a policy of 'controlled immigration'. However for the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU), object to the proposed legislation on the grounds that it would not do enough to limit the number of foreigners coming to Germany.
