SERBIA DROUGHT
Kayaker Aleksandar Bzdusok paddles by the wreckage of a WWII German warship in the Danube river near Prahovo, Serbia, Friday, Aug. 26, 2022. The hulks of dozens of World War II German battle ships have been exposed on the Danube River after severe drought hit most of Europe this summer. The ships, some still laden with explosive munition, used to belong to Nazi Germany's Black Sea fleet that was self-destroyed by Germans as it retreated from advancing Russian forces from Romania in 1944. The sunken ships often hamper river traffic on Europe's second-largest river, especially in summer when water levels are low. There are plans to take those ships out of the river.
