Gabriel Hinojos, 29, receives tattoo removal laser surgery at Homeboy Industries, by volunteering doctor, Scott David Reiter, M.D. Hinojos has received around 45 treatments over the last few years, since he decided to distance himself from the gang he was part of since he was 14. He is getting the tattoos removed because of better job opportunities and also he doesn't want people to continue to see him as a gang member. Homeboy is a gang prevention center in Downtown Los Angeles run by Father Gregory Boyle for over 20 years, where youths from rival gangs work and receive self-improvement classes and therapy side by side. Homeboy offers many services that try to help young people redirect their lives in a positive way and provide them with hope for their future. Tattoo removal is a critical positive step in a long and challenging journey out of gang life and into positive social integration. Homeboy offers free tattoo removal on site. With two laser tattoo removal machines, they provide an average of 250 treatments per month. This continues to be a critical entry point for many clients who come in for tattoo removal, and then learn of the additional services offered. Tattoo removal by laser is known to be painful and takes an average of eight to ten treatments per tattoo, and in some cases up to one year to completely remove a single tattoo.
