GROSSBRITANNIEN SUFFRAGETTE EMMELINE PANKHURST

Emmeline Pankhurst, tireless campaigner on the vote for women and founder of the 'Women's social And Political Union' in 1903. The suffragette movement had it's origins in the 19th century, nationwide social discontent naturally spread to women's rights and with the aid of John Stuart Mill and The Pankhursts, the movement gained momentum by the end of the century. The opposition of Gladstone and Queen Victoria (who considered women to be of weak minds) did much to impede the course of history but this did not deter the suffragettes, whose militant branch set about hunger strikes, riots, chaining themselves to rails, and even death (in the case of Emily Davidson who deliberately jumped infront of the King's horse at the Derby) to get the voice they so deserved.
