H.M.S. Himalaya among icebergs in the South Pacific, 1864. Engraving from a sketch by 'Lieut. H. Stratton Bates, of the 65th Regiment, lately the native interpreter to her Majesty's Forces in New Zealand, who was in command of a detachment of invalid soldiers sent home on board the Himalaya, which arrived at Portsmouth on the 16th March. She fell in with a number of icebergs, of a larger size than are usually met with in the South Pacific Ocean; and it appears from this sketch that they beset the steam-ship in a really formidable way; in fact, the home voyage of the Himalaya was much delayed by this adventure, which is quite worthy of an illustration in our pages'.
