Foto: Fotoarchiv fuer Zeitgeschichte/Archiv The motif from National Socialist propaganda shows the Rothensee ship lift in September/October 1938. National Socialist reporting writes on the back of the picture: "On October 30, inauguration of the Mittelland Canal. At the end of October, one of the most important construction projects of modern times, the Mittelland Canal, will be completed and inaugurated with a ceremony in Magdeburg on October 30. As is well known, the canal leading from Westphalia via Hanover and Brunswick to the Elbe will reach its temporary end at the Rothensee ship lift north of Magdeburg. Here, at the same time, the arm is passed over the Elbe river. The last section Braunschweig-Magdeburg is now approaching its completion. We bring from this section: view into the Rothensee ship lift approaching its completion."
