SCHWEDEN NOBELPREIS PHYSIK 1986
Heinrich Rohrer and Gerd Binnig. Swiss physicist Heinrich Rohrer (born 1933, left) and German physicist Gerd Binnig (born 1947, right). Rohrer and Binnig received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986 for designing the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) while working at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in Rueschlikon. The STM uses a fine needle with an electric potential running through it to scan the surface of an object. It is able to obtain very high magnifications, even visualising individual atoms.
