FORSCHUNG PHYSIK HIGGS BOSON
Component of the LHC. View down a vacuum tube made to house the twin beam pipes for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. The LHC will be built inside the 27km ring tunnel excavated for the Large Electron Positron (LEP) ring at CERN, Europe's largest particle physics laboratory. The LHC's beam pipes will be used to accelerate protons to energies of around 7 TeV (tera-electron volts, million million eV). It is hoped that these energies will allow scientists to detect the Higgs boson, the carrier of the field which is thought to be responsible for the mass of matter.
