Construction workers celebrate the main breakthrough on April 5, 1962, in the Great St Bernard tunnel. Great St Bernard lies on the north-south axis and connects the city of Martigny in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, with the northern Italian city of Aosta in the eponymous valley. The tunnel measures 5,8 kilometers in length. The works for the first transalpine road tunnel commenced in 1958 and were concluded in March 1964.
