USA RAUMFAHRT MARS "PATHFINDER"
This image obtained 20 December, 2001 from NASA shows a new breed of prototype land rover that researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are developing that may someday explore the steep hills and gullies of the Red Planet Mars. Recent Mars Global Surveyor images suggest water outflows near cliff edges and the possibility of rich water-borne mineral deposits that extend all the way to cliff bases. Called "cliff-bots," these rovers work in teams of three. As two of these rovers anchor themselves to the edge of a steep cliff, a third one drives on slopes of more than 60 degrees using coordinated tethers from the anchors. (KEYSTONE/EPA PHOTO/AFP/NASA)
