The first above-ground atomic bomb tests by the USA (1951)
As part of "Operation Ranger", the USA carries out the first upper iridian nuclear weapons test on 27 January 1951 at the Nevada National Security Site's Frenchman Flat test site. A total of five atomic bombs are dropped by B-50 bombers over the test area from January to February 1951. In the same year, from October to November, the second operation called "Buster-Jangle" followed at the same site. Seven more atomic bombs were detonated over open terrain. (luk)
