- Olive orchards on fields around El Jem, Tunisia 2004 - The olive orchards in Tunisia - currently 56 million trees - make up one fifth of the area under cultivation worldwide. The region around El Jem, an ancient cultural landscape in northern Africa, was already particularly productive in Antiquity thanks to outstanding irrigation techniques. The export of olives and olive oil to Rome made of El Jem - as an Imperial Roman colonia it used to be called Thysdrus - a city whose wealth and power in Africa were exceeded only by those of Carthage. Then Thysdrus started to construct an amphitheatre which vied in size with the Coliseum in Rome. Like Carthage, Thysdrus's success gained it the envy and jealousy of the Romans, who got back at that parvenu in 238 BC by reintroducing a considerable and perfidious tax on olive oil. This caused great turmoil throughout Tunisia. The amphitheatre of Thysdrus remained unfinished and the oil plantations in the region declined over the next thousand years.
