- Cultivating peas and wheat near Colfax, Washington, USA 1979 - When it comes to agricultural productivity, the rolling hills of the Palouse district in eastern Washington and northern Idaho are unsurpassed in the United States - but also as regards soil loss through erosion. Themselves a product of wind erosion - loess blown here millions of years ago - the hills are now being destroyed by washdown. The local farmers carry on a desperate battle of resistance with good cultivation practices - thereby creating agrarian paintings, albeit without any thought for art. In our picture, wheat produces the gold, freshly threshed dried peas provide the threads of silver, fallow land the black, and grass the green. The farmer has started digging up the ground with a chisel plough and mixing the pea straw into the soil. Stubble mulching provides the field with a layer of protection against the much-feared winter rains and frosts. Formerly, ploughing back stubble was common, now it is frowned upon as promoting erosion. (Georg Gerster by KEYSTONE) *** Originalbildbeschrieb/Original Caption by Georg Gerster ***
