South African heart transplant surgeon Christiaan Barnard is pictured. On the 3rd December 1967 Barnard led the South African team of surgeons in the first ever heart transplant operation, at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Capetown. The patient died 17 days after rejecting the new heart. Barnard continued to practice and refine this type of surgery and the survival tme of his patients increased.
