WASP TONGUE SURFACE, SEM
Wasp tongue surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the tongue of a wasp. Unlike the equivalent structure in bees (the proboscis) the wasp has a short tongue that is used for licking not sucking. This surface structure is adapted to licking. Magnification: x65 when printed at 10 centimetres across. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/STEVE GSCHMEISSNER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
