NORDIRLAND BLOODY SUNDAY BUERGERKRIEG
RCOD 323-56 Grieving Widow Obligatory credit - CAMERA PRESS/William Carson The history of 'The Troubles' date back to Britain's first invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. Since then Ireland has been at war with itself: Catholic versus Protestant, Republican versus Unionist. The recent history of unrest in Ulster began in 1969 when Catholic's demanding civil rights met violent Protestant opposition, providing the spark for years of armed struggle which ended with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. This 1972 picture shows the grieving widow of a 'Bloody Sunday' victim clinging to the hearse carrying his corpse. 1972 (KEYSTONE/CAMERA PRESS/William Carson)
