FALLOUT SHELTER, USA, 1950S
Cold War fallout shelter. Interior of a fallout shelter in the USA, around 1957. At this point, in the late 1950s, the Cold War between the USA and the USSR was reaching its peak. Designed for a family, this fallout shelter included a two-week supply of food and water, a battery-operated radio, auxiliary light sources, and first aid, sanitary and other equipment. Following a nuclear strike by the Soviet Union, the family would be able to shelter here until radiation had fallen to safe levels. This shelter was constructed by US Civil Defense personnel.
